INTERNSHIP
Summer Job Opportunity for High School Students
Program Overview:
The Summer Youth Internship Program is a short-term learning and
employment opportunity for Nashville Davidson County youth. The
program provides a combination of work experience, site-based
learning, and exposure to the staff and functions of Metro
government Offices and Departments.
Participants will be assigned to work at a Metro Department for
twenty hours per week for six weeks. In addition, both before and
throughout the program, all participants will receive opportunities
for skill building and training. Participants will be paid $8 an
hour for both their work time and their learning time for a total of
156 hours. Participants are expected to provide their own
transportation to both the training and work sites.

Final
Project:
All Metro Summer Internship Program participants will complete a
Final Project as part of their Program experience. The Project is a
group assignment and each member of the group is expected to
participate in the formation and presentation of the Project.
The Final Project will have three pieces:

A 10
minute presentation to be given at the closing celebration on
July 15th

Handouts
to go with the presentation (PowerPoint slides with notes, an
outline, or other informational handout)
-
A visual
aid (Photos, PowerPoint slides, a theatrical piece, or some
other visual representation of your own choosing)
All three
pieces of the Final Project must answer the following questions:

What did
we learn about the City?
-
What did
we learn about work?
-
What did
we learn about ourselves?

Who Can Apply:
Eligible participants must be enrolled students in a high school
in Davidson County who will complete their Junior year in May 2006
and/or expect to graduate in Spring 2007.

Application Process:
Applications
will be reviewed for the following criteria:
-
Responsiveness, completeness, and neatness;
-
Diversity
of schools represented;
-
Strength
of written responses; and
-
Strength
of recommendation letters.
Final
selection of participants will be made by a panel interview.
All applicants must submit completed application packets by
mail, personal delivery, or fax to the Nashville Career
Advancement Center by 4:00 p.m. on March 3rd. Late
applications will not be accepted.
Applicants selected for an interview will be notified by March
3rd. Final notification of selection will be March 17th.

Application packets must include the
following information:

One recommendation letter.
Acceptable recommendations can come from a teacher,
guidance counselor, coach, or any other adult with
whom the applicant has an established relationship
(no recommendations from family members);

A completed
Metro application (typed or printed in black
ink); and
-
A completed
Summer
Internship Program application (typed or printed
in black ink).
