Rutherford County Information

Nestled in the “Heart of Tennessee”, Rutherford County is the geographic center of the state and comprises 612 square miles of land at an elevation of 619 feel above sea level. Rutherford is located just southeast of Nashville and it ranks fifth in county size in the state – right behind the counties of the four metropolitan areas.

The 1999 Census estimates place the Rutherford County population at 171.401. With a population growth rate of six percent since 1970, Rutherford is one of the fastest growing counties in Tennessee.

The economic outlook for the county is “excellent according to the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce. Unemployment rates are between two and four percent. Personal income was more than $3.2 in 1998, and per capita income of county residents was $22,041 in 1996. The median house value was $105, 325 in 1998 as compared to the U.S. average of $123,000. Since 1990, employment has increased by 54 percent in the county, according to the Chamber.

Sixty-five percent of the workforce was employed in manufacturing, service, and retail in 1996. With 23 percent of jobs in the manufacturing industry, Rutherford boasts more than 160 diversified industries and a thriving restaurant, service, and retail market.
