Barriers to
employment run high amongst job seekers that reside in or near public
housing developments. Issues such as lack of job skills, education,
childcare, and transportation are considered the most difficult to
overcome.
The Nashville Career Advancement Center and the Metro Development and
Housing Agency launched a pilot project in 1996 to provide employment
services to individuals residing in public housing in South Nashville. The
project successful impacted the lives of many residents in the South
Nashville area, however, other communities missed out on opportunities
that may be the key to self-sufficiency. July 2002, the services were
extended in order to provide employment services to public housing
residents in North, South, East, and West Nashville.
The goal of bridging the gap in order that people and jobs connect has
proven to be a beneficial avenue for job seekers to access employers and
have the opportunity of obtain and maintain employment.
